Screenings

Screenings will be happening Semester 1!

Screenings are happening five times a week in this semester. Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays are having screenings from 1 pm - 2 pm while Tuesdays are having them from 12 pm - 2 pm. Come on whichever days your timetable allows and choose from a wide range of shows to follow along with us!

If you can't find the library just inside the screening room it may not be available that day - we try and make sure it's at every screening, but sometimes it's just not possible. If you'd like to check if it'll be available at a specific day, please email [email protected].

A map of the screening locations can be found here.

If you're still (understandably) lost trying to find the screening room, we recommend using this site (they have a handy smartphone app too).

Monday - Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

The Art of Storytelling’s Fatal Punch Line

Drama, Storytelling, Rakugo, Literally a Work of Art, 2016

https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=10960

Next Screening: Monday, 27 March 2017
Time: 1:00PM - 2:00PM
Episode(s): 9 - 10

Place: Doug McDonnell-113

Take a stroll back to the Shouwa period and take a seat to listen to one expert storyteller’s story about his entry to the world which now consumes his entire being. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is a story about rakugo, which is essentially one-man storytelling, each and every piece of rakugo told is done so expertly, taking the expert abilities of a voice actor to portray many different characters and pairing them with animation to allow a perfectly orchestrated rakugo performance. This show flew under quite a few people’s radar, but you’ll hear plenty of praise from anyone who did see the show.

Tuesday

Place: Old Geology Theatre 2

Ben-To

Ben-To

Comedy, Action, Based on true stories (maybe), 2011

https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=8292

Next Screening: Tuesday, 28 March 2017
Time: 12:00PM - 1:00PM
Episode(s): 8 - 10

Supply and demand, the two most fundamental aspects of economics. Both constantly flow and shift to reach the equilibrium, thus inevitably leading to the appearance of rifts. And it is within such such confining and chaotic rifts that ‘they’ thrive, proud hunting wolves putting wealth, pride and livelihood on the line as they battle each other. Yes, all of this for those magnificent half price bentos.

Non Non Biyori

Non Non Biyori

Slice of Life, Comedy, Nostalgia, Nyanpasu!, 2013

https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=9722

Next Screening: Tuesday, 28 March 2017
Time: 1:00PM - 2:00PM
Episode(s): 8 - 10

Non Non Biyori takes the slice of life genre to an absolute high point, painting a wonderfully enjoyable picture of life in the country in a small town. The show exhibits extremely beautifully executed scenes which are often cute, comedic, nostalgic, triumphant, or even very emotional, and mixes of all the above. It’s a must watch if you’ve ever lived in a country area and still just as good even if you haven’t. So come along and enjoy the fun.

Wednesday - New Game!

New Game!

Game Making, Industry, Somewhat Subtle Social Commentary, 2016

https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=11736

Next Screening: Wednesday, 29 March 2017
Time: 1:00PM - 2:00PM
Episode(s): 7 - 9

Place: Old Arts-103 (Theatre A)

New Game! presents what is quite possibly the first genuine look at realistic game making in the history of anime, looking at the professional game making industry through the lens of a new employee working in the art department of a game studio. Unlike many anime addressing the idea of making a game which often focus on doujin games where the members of the team are all talented experts who can fully handle their roles (except for the main character who appears to be letting the team down), New Game! takes a more realistic look at the growth of game making in a professional setting and the struggles that those involved face. The show has its share of silly fun, but also sprinkles in a number of observations about some issues faced in the industry.

Thursday - Macross Frontier

Macross Frontier

Mecha, Romance, Idol, Space Opera, Action, Drama, War, Sci-Fi, 2007

https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=5415

Next Screening: Thursday, 30 March 2017
Time: 1:00PM - 2:00PM
Episode(s): 9 - 10

Place: Sidney Myer Asia Centre-G01

Macross Frontier is a mecha show which may never show its age, managing to pull off mecha, some romance elements, idols and sci-fi to heights which even shows dedicated to these aspects rarely reach. It is often considered to have the best love triangle within a mecha show, the best mecha fights featured in any idol show and some of the most popular idol songs out of any romance drama show… seems legit

Friday - Kara no Kyoukai

Kara no Kyoukai

The Garden of Sinners

Action, Thriller, Supernatural, Mystery, 2007

https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4932

Next Screening: Friday, 24 March 2017
Time: 1:00PM - 2:00PM
Episode(s): 4

Place: Redmond Barry-103 (Lowe Theatre)

2017, the year of Fate, what better way to celebrate it than to screen something that is… not Fate… ? Kara no Kyoukai chronicles the life of Ryougi Shiki, a girl possessing the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, and her dealings with the various paranormal events that occur around her. Penned by Nasu Kinoko before his creation of the Fate series, the story is set in a part of the larger universe that also encompasses both the Fate series and the Tsukihime series known as the ‘Nasuverse’ and shares multiple setting and concepts as well. A must watch for fans of Nasu Kinoko’s extensive yet meticulous worldview and rest assured that this show will not have any whiny teenager sprouting quotes such as ‘People die if they are …...’ NOTE: We are screening the movie series, and not the anime. As such, the 'episode number' will not actually correspond with our current progress. If you miss a week or wish to join us midway through the screening, please send an email to [email protected], and we'd be happy to let you know where we are!
